normandy park garden renovation

This early 1950’s mid-century modern home sits in a garden full of layers of previous garden design and intriguing artifacts. The original brick patio and stairs, now partially covered by a sturdy terraced deck, echo a prior era. A multitude of decorative iron grates were left in the garden by a prior iron-working owner. The current residents wanted to accentuate these layers through a delicate upgrade of features, aiming to make the garden more inviting. Decaying fence segments were replaced along the face of the house. A swoop of perennials and grasses were added along the front walkway, distinguishing the front entrance from the kitchen entrance. Old decorative iron grates were fit between the exiting slab pavers, making them a feature. A sagging pergola in the backyard was updated along with the addition of a zig-zag of party lights. An old piece of barrel keg found on site was converted into a bamboo water feature. Swaths of shade and drought tolerant sedge, mixed with perennials, native shrubs and giant hosta hug the perimeter of backyard improvements.
